Costumes- Bad guy

We researched stereotypical characters/villains/terrorists who like to blow things up and looked at different images and compared them.

We thought it would be best the research maybe cartoon movies, as they usually over dramatise everything.

Bomb voyage- The Incredibles

Unnamed terrorist- Team America

This is only a couple examples, but this is usually what type of characters people think of when they think of 'terrorists' and/or bad guys who blow things up.

The bad guys are usually represented as foreign and most of the time at war with whoever the 'hero' is.

Most of the time in spoofs or cartoons, the terrorist is typically of an Asian background and wears a turban and have beards.

We decided to use the idea of a stereotypical terrorist for our bad guy, this is also so they are easily identifiable by the audience.

Costumes- Spy

For the costumes we decided to research stereotypical outfits associated with characters in spy espionage movies

We first decided to look up characters that play spys, for example James Bond, ethan hunt- mission impossible, Agents J and K- Men in black and Aaron cross- The Bourne legacy.

From looking at two of the pictures (men in black and James Bond) we notice that the pattern seems to stay the same, they both wear suits, usually black with a white shirt, a dark plain or black tie and black shoes. They are represented as formal and clearly in control and seeming more important because they dress appropriately.

In the other two pictures (Mission impossible and The Bourne legacy) they do not wear suits or ties. The fact that they are dressed in black or dark clothing could suggest that they may not be dressed like a stereotypical spy, but it could still suggest they are a powerful character.

The suits definitely make the characters stand out and it is easy to identify who is the good guy, though there is a problem when you have most of the cast dressed in suits, it just looks like a banquet gone wrong. With the casual way of dressing, it is also difficult to identify who is in control because they blend in with the people around them, though it comes in handy if the 'spy' does not want to be recognised immediately.

For the spy we came to the overall conclusion of them wearing a suit, as this is how they are usually/stereotypically represented.

Age representaion

Mis en scene:
  • Shows each person getting ready, pointing out the differences in each age category
  • Everyone is at a funeral and an old man complains about missing the football, showing that he thinks he has better things to do with his priorities than be at his wife's funeral.
  • Everybody is sitting at the table, separated from each other, with the grumpy snooty old women at one end, the husband in the middle and the younger characters at the opposite end, indicating an obvious divide in age and attitudes
  • The old women make everyone say grace, which is usually quite religious and traditional to say grace before every meal, so this would mean because they are older, they were taught how to do things differently when they were younger.
Ethnicity

Hotel Babylon

  • Black guy being professional and formal towards customers
  • Attitude changes when he bumps into a friend
